Wellness and preventative care

Just like us, pets should visit their doctor annually to ensure they are in optimal health.
This allows the veterinarian to note any changes to their health, monitor their progression in certain areas, and make recommendations based on age and lifestyle.

A typical physical exam includes assessment of the following:

  • Temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate

  • Skin and body condition, including potential indicators for allergies

  • Eyes, ears, mouth

  • Cardiovascular and respiratory system

  • Gastrointestinal system

  • Neurological system

  • Any orthopedic changes

  • Discussion with you regarding their appetite, water intake, and attitude

After the physical exam, the veterinarian will go through their findings together with you during your appointment, and discuss any questions or concerns you may have. Questions the veterinarian might ask include; “How has your pet’s energy level been since their last appointment”, or “What changes, if any, have you noticed in the past few months or weeks?”.

Vaccines

Wellness exams often include vaccines. Vaccine recommendations are based on lifestyle, age, and the legal requirements in Ontario.
We also offer vaccine titre testing on an individual basis.

The core vaccines for adults dogs in Ontario are:

  • Canine Distemper Virus (annual)

  • Canine Adenovirus (annual)

  • Canine Parvovirus (annual)

  • Canine Parainfluenza Virus (annual)

  • Rabies Virus (every three years)

The core vaccines for adult cats in Ontario are:

  • Feline Herpesvirus type 1 (annual)

  • Feline Calicivirus (annual)

  • Feline Panleukopenia Virus (annual)

  • Rabies Virus (annual)

Your yearly wellness exam is a great time to stock up on your flea and tick prevention for the warmer months, especially as ticks become active above 0 degrees Celsius.
